SHERIFF R.G. CAMPBELL
1862-1864
Most historians agree that Campbell probably served a two - year term as sheriff of Hamilton County between 1862 to 1864. (Although some records indicate that he may have served from 1868 to 1870). By this time the state of Tennessee was already under the strong influence of William Gannaway Brownlow, Tennessee’s future governor. Brownlow’s fervent Union patriotism later became known as “Brownlow rule” during his term of office.
