HCSO Deputy Involved in Single Car Accident While Trying to Avoid Animal

03/16/2016

Hamilton County, TN - Earlier this morning around 6:00 am, an on-duty Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a single vehicle accident near the intersection of Sequoyah Road and Highway 27.

According to the deputy, a large dark animal, most likely a bear, ran into the roadway at which time the deputy swerved to miss the animal. He then proceeded off the road and rolled his vehicle. Other motorist also witnessed the animal, but due to the darkness and the quickness of the animal, it was unclear exactly what it was.

The deputy was transported to the hospital for a medical check to make sure he was OK. No serious injuries were incurred and the HCSO is happy to report he is doing well.

The HCSO would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that as warmer Spring weather approaches, please be on the lookout for increased animal activity especially near roadways and other highly traveled areas.

Most animals reproduce in the spring and early summer months which means there will be more juvenile animals foraging for food in new places.

No further information is available.
